MINI BEAST MANSION UPDATE !
After some really hard work and fantastic creative thinking we have 3 winners from our Mini Beast Mansion Competition. Well done to Sakinabano, Raiyan and Joshua S for their brilliant ideas. (See below). Their work will now be recreated by our premises officers and placed in our Wildlife Area.
DESIGN A HEDGEHOG HIDE / MINI BEAST MANSION
As part of the ongoing development of our outside learning environment, this year we are going to improve our nature garden. We are going to start by attracting more wildlife to our nature garden. To do this, we would like you to design either a hedgehog hide or a mini-beast mansion. The best designs will then be made and put in our garden.
Hedgehogs usually hibernate from November until March. This is because cold weather means food supplies are low, at a time when a hedgehog would usually require more calories to keep it warm and mobile. Unless they have somewhere safe to hibernate, there can be many dangers out there for hedgehogs. We would like to create a hedgehog hide which will allow a hedgehog to hibernate safely through the winter.
Have a look at these links for inspiration for your hedgehog hide.
We will also be making our very own mini-beast mansion to attract lots of creepy-crawlies into our nature garden. Mini-beasts like small, dark spaces which are sheltered from the sun. Your mansion can be made of almost anything, but untreated wood (like logs) work very well. These websites will give you more information.
